Beautiful errors: zelf or zichzelf?

You can learn from errors, especially when the errors are beautiful and/or hilarious. This way, it’s easier not to make these errors (again).

“Vanavond kookt hij zichzelf.”

This should be:

“Vanavond kookt hij zelf.”

"Zelf" is without help of others.
  • Hij heeft dit huis zelf gebouwd.
Or you’re speaking about yourself.
  • Ga je naar Spanje? Wat leuk! Zelf ben ik daar nooit geweest.

Because:

“Hij ziet zichzelf.”

"Zichzelf" (or mezelf, jezelf, ...) is the object form of the sentence.
  • Ik trakteer mezelf op een stuk taart.
You use it most often with a preposition:
  • Hij kookt vanavond voor zichzelf.
  • En ik zei tegen mezelf: "Wat een prachtige wereld" - Louis Armstrong
